Zirconium, or ceramic implants, are a metal free biocompatible alternative to titanium implants. Zirconium implants are often used in patients who are allergic or sensitive to titanium and metals. Zirconium implants are also used in patients who have concerns about the long term effects of a metal based restoration. Zirconium implants have excellent soft tissue compatibility and are highly aesthetic due to their opaque color. Zirconium implants have been shown to accumulate less plaque (bacteria) than titanium implants, thus reducing the risk of periodontal bone loss.
